As controls on exhaust emissions of particulate matter from road vehicles have taken effect over the past decade, non-exhaust emissions arising from abrasion of brakes, tyres and the road surface, and from resuspension of dust have become more prominent, and now exceed exhaust emissions. In this regard, the “Review of Non-Exhaust Particle Emissions from Road Vehicles” were carried out, summarising the current state of knowledge. It is based on an overview of the voluminous literature, building upon earlier reviews, without seeking to be exhaustive. Besides the chemical and physical properties of non-exhaust particles, their toxicity and health effects are respected as well.
