VDA emphatically rejects DUH criticism concerning plug-in hybrids

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) has emphatically rejected the criticism expressed by the environmental association DUH relating to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
This is clearly an attempt to bring a modern powertrain into disrepute. Plug-in hybrids have been shown to operate with zero emissions on routes of up to 70 kilometers, as long as their batteries are charged. However, if a plug-in hybrid is driven in the extreme sport mode while the battery is empty, the result is higher consumption values – just as with conventional combustion engines. In addition, in urban traffic, where cars often brake and speed up again, PHEVs have also been shown to have lower consumption than cars powered by comparable internal combustion engines – even when the battery is empty. This is because the PHEV’s recuperative braking saves fuel.
The new generation of PHEV vehicles is even more powerful and offers a greater electrical range. But rapid and universal expansion of the charging infrastructure in Germany and Europe is necessary if the new PHEVs are to realize their full potential. For many consumers, PHEVs represent a route into electric mobility combining the best of both worlds – electric driving wherever possible, and a reliable range for covering longer distances.
The values measured by the DUH are neither representative nor helpful in the discussion of how the CO2 emissions from traffic can be permanently reduced.
The type-approved vehicles from German group brands fulfill the statutory requirements. The VDA urgently calls on the DUH to engage in a more objective discussion.
